Immunolocalization of PfEMP1 (a), PfEMP3 (b) and KAHRP (c) in rings (upper row) and mature torphozoites (lower row) using specific antibodies and visualization by confocal microscopy. PfEMP3 is deposited under the membrane of the infected RBC. Mutation of PfEMP3 disrupts transfer of PfEMP1 to the outside of infected cells.
