Location of STEVOR within infected RBC. (A) Colocalization studies with a 52 kDa rhoptry specific antibody 61.2 shows that STEVOR is not located within the rhoptries but appears to be closer to the erythrocyte surface. (B) Colocalization studies with PfEMP3 specific antibodies indicate that STEVOR is located in the same compartment as truncated PfEMP3, which has previously been shown to accumulate in Maurer’s cleft (MC). (C) Studies with antibodies against MC protein PfSBP1 shows that STEVOR is tightly associated with these structures. Parasite nuclei were stained with DAPI (blue), anti-Rhoptry, anti-PfBSP1, or anti-PfEMP3 (red) and anti-STEVOR antibodies (green).
