Intact PRBC containing mature trophozoite and schizont-stage parasites were incubated sequentially with antibody and Protein A gold (10-nm particles) then processed for immunoEM. (A) Acute serum from patient 434; (B) 3-week convalescent serum from patient 434; (C) serum BL-2from Ghana. In (A) and (C) the bar represents 0.1 mm. In (B) the bar represents 0.05 mm. Authors suggest that Abs present in the sera bind to PfEMP1.
