Mitochondrial localization of PfApn1. Immunofluorescence confocal microscopy of infected erythrocytes using purified anti-PfApn1 Ab with Mitotracker Red-CMXRos (A) and anti-PfHU Ab (B) as mitochondrial and apicoplast markers, respectively. Scale (2.5 μm) is shown at the bottom of the right panel. The PfApn1 protein signal co-localized with the mitochondrial marker dye Mitotracker Red with no overlap observed with the apicoplast marker PfHU, indicating that nuclear-encoded PfApn1 targets to the parasite mitochondrion.
